چکیده

We present eld potential and multiple single unit data simultaneously recorded from somatosensory cortex of the anesthetized rat using a multi-site silicon electrode. We nd that although single units re spontaneously only during troughs of the low frequency eld potential, there is high variability in the timing of their ring. Viewing our results in the context of previous anatomical, physiological, and modeling studies of cerebral cortex, we suggest that local eld potentials are better characterized as a recording of local synaptic currents rather than a recording of the superposition of spike activity in populations of neurons. If true, then our data show that similar circuit-level synaptic inputs do not predict the timing of spiking output by the neurons receiving those inputs. These results have important implications for theories of cerebral cortical network function and information coding based on the interpretation of coherence in recorded eld potentials.

The effect of morphine on some electrophysiological parameters of paragigantocellularis and locus coeruleus nuclei interconnections

As one of the most important diffused brain modulatory systems, the nucleus locus coeruleus (LC) receives most of its afferents from the nucleus paragigantocellularis (PGi) and plays a major role in the control of drug dependence and some emotional and exciting states. For detailed investigation of the effect of morphine on relationship between these two brain stem nuclei, the activity of the r...

Temporal coupling of field potentials and action potentials in the neocortex.

The local field potential (LFP) is an aggregate measure of group neuronal activity and is often correlated with the action potentials of single neurons. In recent years, investigators have found that action potential firing rates increase during elevations in power high-frequency band oscillations (50-200 Hz range). However, action potentials also contribute to the LFP signal itself, making the...

Evidence for slow (2-10 Hz) and gamma frequency coherence between spike trains and local field potentials in the cerebellum

7 A method for detecting relationships between single-unit spike trains and local %eld potentials (LFPs) was developed and applied to recordings from rat cerebellum. LFPs were repeatedly 9 %ltered with a shifting frequency window. The resulting traces were transformed into peak-time point processes for comparison with spike trains using “relative-phase” analysis (Biol. Cyber11 net., in press). ...

The effect of pinna reflex and dynamic stretch on spike discharge of single ?-axons and spindle afferents in caudal muscle spindles in rat

The ?-axons supplying muscle spindle (MS) induce a particular pattern of activity in spindle Ia and II afferents on contraction. From a dynamic viewpoint, the Ia shows increasing spike rates, but II-afferents do not show any activity. For evaluation of nerve fiber activity, spike amplitude (SA) is suggested to measure it as well as its benefit of diagnosing clinical symptoms. This paper aims to...
